Boycott Blaine!
As an Australian I am offended by a large
American company taking a stereotypical idea of an Australian
male and attempting to profit by it. Australia is enriched
by it's multi-cultural society and we have successfully
cast off the impression that we are all blue-eyed, bronzed, blonde,
beach-loving Aussies. At least we had, now Mattel has
released their version of Barbie's latest boyfriend, Blaine, and
surprise surprise he is a blonde surfer type (about as typically
Australian as the Australian Barbie, below left, they released in 1993 who
was supposed to be dressed as a jillaroo but
looked like a bizarre Hollywood version of Calamity Jane!). At
least he could be made in Australia, but no. |

Hypocrisy
One of the reasons Mattel so avidly takes legal action over
anyone using the name Barbie is because they want to have
control over how their trademark is used, well what about
Australians wanting control over how our name and cultural
identity are used Mattel?
We can do something about it, send a loud message in the
only way they will understand and don't give them your
money, leave Mattel products on the shelves and choose an
item made by another company. |

Australia's very own version of
The Easter Bunny! The bilby is an endangered Australian
native animal and has been used in Australia as the cuter
Aussie Easter icon for the past few years. Even
chocolate bilbys are available in supermarkets everywhere
across our 6 states. So support our little Aussie Easter
Bilby battler and help their numbers climb from the 600 or so
in the bush today. |
