1959 Number One Barbie, Bild Lilli, A German Sex Toy is used as the design for the first Barbie Doll dated 1958

Bild Lilli to Bratz, Copycat Barbies
Mattel Inc goes overboard at trying to 'defend' it's famous trademark, but the truth is that naughty Mattel has taken the ideas for some of the more interesting and best selling Barbie dolls from dolls made by other designers and manufacturers, tsk tsk smack bottom Mattel.
Here we name just a few:

8...and in the beginning, well, you may as well start as you will continue, here's the 1955 Bild Lilli with the 1959 No.1 Barbie, and this is just a close up of their faces, their bodies are nearly identical too!

2001 Bratz doll Chloe and 2002 My Scene Barbie, the Bratz outsold Barbie in 2002 so Mattel desperately tried to take some of the action back with this clone.

Sindy,  by the British toy company Pedigree from 1963-1985.  They had ideas taken by Mattel such as the popular Active Sindy released in 1975 who had a posable body and was dressed as a ballerina, in 1976 Mattel releases *taa daa* a posable ballerina Barbie.

The 1980's saw the start of MTV and the cartoon series Jem with her band The Holograms which spawned a range of fabulous fashion dolls made by Hasbro.  Mattel then came out with Barbie and The Rockers, even marketing a cartoon movie of them singing in space...somebody pass me a bucket.

1974 Tiffany Taylor by Ideal, promoted as a Disco Queen, in 1976 Mattel then releases the Supersize Barbie also advertised as, wait for it, a Disco Queen!
They both have a swimsuit with an overskirt and are 18 inches tall, the first time Mattel made a Barbie doll taller than 11.5 inches.
