Barbies!
The world's most futile toy has been
around since 1959 and collecting Barbie dolls is one of the most popular and
misguided
hobbies in the world. Barbie Collector Clubs are populated mainly by middle aged,
female baby-boomers
(who are suffering
empty-nest syndrome and really should get out of the house occasionally)
and gay men. |

Barbie began in the mid 1950’s when Ruth Handler purchased a Bild
Lilli doll, a German sex toy aimed at men based on a character in a
newspaper and sold in adult shops and tobacconists. Ruth "borrowed" her design as the basis for the original Barbie
but changed her into a 19 year old teenage fashion model who supposedly had
innocent, chaste and virtuous qualities (did she actually look at a
Number One Barbie?, talk about vixen!) In 1959
the Barbie doll debuted at the New York Toy Show but sales were miserable as
parents were reluctant to give their sweet, little daughters a toy that
looked like she should be hanging around dark street corners and bars.

Since reaching the heady heights of the collectible doll Barbie has almost
lost her original purpose, male toy designers
able to sell vinyl effigies of teenage girls wearing no panties under short
skirts. But only almost, they
quelled this for a while by painting panties onto each doll or stamping the
letter B into the crotch area or both, however, this didn't fool anyone for
very long.
They even played with giving her smaller breasts and a larger waist, nice
try, now seriously... |

Owning or allowing your child to play with a Barbie
doll has been linked to a range of problems from self-image to making an
entire generation of people who are obsessed with appearance and
commercialism (which isn't a bad thing if you want your kid to be the next
Michael Jackson of plastic surgery or have a shoe collection to rival Imelda
Marcos.) Mattel also have become the dictators on how children play
with their Barbies, they decide the clothes, they decide the accessories,
they decide her profession, they even give her a credit card. So the aim of
Anti-Barbie is simple, let kids be kids and let's be honest about what
Mattel really cares about: getting your money! |
